Welcome to the WSST 2017 Conference, Going for Gold! This year’s theme is a play off the name of the resort as well as our goal to help you become the best science educator possible. We want you to go for gold!
Limit 25 people This workshop will present examples of how to teach elementary school students how to “read” a graphic of the structure of human body systems and to show their understanding using a flowchart. This is a skill that relates well to literacy standards and practices as well as to the NGSS crosscutting concept of structure and function. We will share an example from our work with sixth grade students who used flow charts to interpret the meaning behind diagrams of the human circulatory and respiratory systems. Our students’ flowcharts allowed us to determine several misconceptions that they had about how the structures of the heart and lungs were related to the function of these systems. Teachers are encouraged to bring lesson or unit ideas to work on with coaching from the presenters in regards to a curricular topic that can involve the use of flow charts as a visual tool for students to share their current understanding and to construct their own meaning.
