Welcome to the WSST 2017 Conference, Going for Gold! This year’s theme is a play off the name of the resort as well as our goal to help you become the best science educator possible. We want you to go for gold!

Stoichiometry Labs for General Chemistry

Learn how we use the reaction of Zinc & Copper (II) sulfate in a General Chemistry class to illustrate limiting & excess reactants. We will look at how using different ratios of moles of Zinc & Copper (II) sulfate creates a good visual representation to strengthen the understanding of limiting and excess reactants through general observations. We also gather temperature data to find the best combination of Zinc to Copper sulfate.

We will also share an inquiry based lab, the 2 Gram Lab to illustrate stoichiometry. This can be as guided or inquiry based as you choose, but the general idea is to have students determine the chemicals and amount they will need to make 2 grams of a precipitate. They need to do the calculations, research the safety and disposal of the chemicals they use, as well as come up with a procedure and test for excess. Then they carry out the lab.
