Welcome to the WSST 2017 Conference, Going for Gold! This year’s theme is a play off the name of the resort as well as our goal to help you become the best science educator possible. We want you to go for gold!
What do NGSS and PBL offer all our students who are smart, creative and curious but may not succeed in a traditional science classroom? And what does the combination of NGSS and PBL offer teachers?
We intend to begin the conversation around this question. We will share with you our thinking around why and how to combine these two complementary frameworks.
We are PLC teaching partners at an MMSD elementary school. Last year we had the opportunity to worked with NSTA experts to create an integrated PBL unit aligned with NGSS and CCSS. Then we taught the unit, and Disney videotaped our enactment.
We will share with you the development process of the unit, clips from the video tapes developed by the grant, as well as the unit itself. We will also describe what we learned from the experience.
You will leave the session with a better understanding of PBL and how it works with the NGSS. You will have new ideas for motivating some of your harder-to-reach students by creating a design challenge for your students based on the core ideas in the NGSS. Finally, you will have some materials to launch your own PBL and NGSS aligned unit.
