During this session, we will begin by discussing the process we went through to create our science and engineering unit. More specifically, our process included becoming familiar with the science concepts second graders should learn as outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards. We then explored possible engineering design tasks that could connect to one or more of the second grade science concepts. From this experience, we determined our engineering task would involve designing a home using materials (Matter) that could withstand wind and water erosion (Earth systems). Our next step involved outlining the big ideas to be covered in the unit and fleshing out each lesson the second graders would need to experience in order to be prepared for the engineering design task.

After introducing how the unit was designed, we will allow the participants to engage in aspects of each lesson. We will conclude the presentation by answering any questions the participants have about the design process or actually lessons. Participants will leave the session with a copy of the unit to use in their classroom.
